What is the hanger drop on a canvas with a sawtooth bracket?

Usually very small. A sawtooth mounted on the back of the stretcher bar typically puts the hanging point half an inch to an inch below the top edge, so the nail lands almost at the height of the canvas top. Measure from the top edge down to the notch that will sit on the nail.

How far apart should a triptych hang?

Know what is on the back

Canvases arrive with one of three setups: a sawtooth bracket centered on the top stretcher bar, a pair of D-rings on the side bars, or wire strung between the sides. Some arrive with nothing, in which case a sawtooth costs little and installs in a minute, but a pair of D-rings is worth the extra five minutes on anything wider than about 2 feet.

The drop is smaller than a framed picture's

On a framed piece, wire can sag 2 to 4 inches below the top edge. On a canvas, a sawtooth or stretcher-mounted D-rings put the hanging point roughly half an inch to 2 inches down. The center height math is unchanged, center plus half the height minus the drop, but the nail lands much closer to the canvas top. Guessing a framed-picture drop on a canvas hangs it visibly low.

Worked example, plus the two-point upgrade

A 24 by 36 inch canvas, hung tall, centered at 57 inches, with a sawtooth 1 inch below the top: the nail goes at 57 plus 18 minus 1, so 74 inches. The same canvas on two D-rings 2 inches down and 2 inches in from each side takes two nails at 73 inches, 20 inches apart. The two-point version can't pivot, sits flatter, and holds level on a wall that gets bumped.

Weight is rarely the problem

A 16 by 20 inch canvas weighs a pound or two; even a 36 by 48 gallery wrap is usually under 8 pounds. Standard picture hooks handle that with margin, and quality adhesive strips rated for the weight work well on smooth walls, one strip pair near each side to prevent tilt. Floater frames add a few pounds and usually bring their own D-rings; treat those like a framed piece.

Deep wraps cast shadows

Gallery-wrapped canvas comes on stretchers from about three-quarters of an inch to 2 inches deep. The deep profile throws a soft shadow line under raking light and stands off the wall noticeably at close range, in hallways for example. Where the depth looks bulky, mount the hardware slightly lower on the stretcher so the canvas leans imperceptibly back toward the wall, or choose the slim profile at purchase time.

Diptychs and triptychs

Multi-panel sets live or die on alignment. Keep 2 to 3 inches between panels, identical to the quarter inch, and run one shared horizontal center line through the full set, then center the whole assembly on the wall or furniture as a single artwork. Canvas care on the wall

Canvas has no glass to protect it, which is why it is light. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades pigment and slackens the fabric, and out of kitchens' grease-carrying air and bathrooms without ventilation. A canvas that develops a gentle ripple can often be re-tensioned from the stretcher keys in its corners, small wooden wedges that expand the frame a fraction when tapped.

Identify the hardware: sawtooth, D-rings, wire, or nothing yet.
Measure the true drop from the top edge to the hanging point; it is often under an inch.
Use two support points on anything wider than about 2 feet.
Match multi-panel gaps exactly and share one center line across the set.
Adhesive strips work for most canvas weights on smooth paint; check the rating anyway.
Keep canvas out of direct sun and unventilated humidity.
