The weight decides the hardware, the room decides the height
Mirrors fail differently from framed prints. The glass makes them several times heavier than artwork the same size, and a fall means shattered glass, not a dented frame. So the order of decisions changes: first establish what the mirror weighs, then choose wall attachment that carries it with margin, and only then use the normal center-height math to place the marks.
Weigh it, don't guess
Quarter-inch mirror glass weighs a little over 3 pounds per square foot before you add the frame. A framed 24 by 36 inch mirror is commonly 15 to 25 pounds. Full-length mirrors and ornate framed pieces can pass 50 pounds.
The reliable method costs nothing: stand on a bathroom scale holding the mirror, subtract your own weight, and round up. Every hardware decision below keys off that number.
One nail is never enough
Heavy mirrors should hang from two fixing points, even when the back has a single wire. Two points halve the load on each fastener, stop the mirror rotating out of level every time someone bumps the console, and keep the mirror flatter against the wall.
If the back only has a wire, hang the wire across two hooks set apart at the same height rather than one central hook.
Marking two fixing points from one center height
The height math is the same as for a picture, applied twice. Decide the mirror's visual center, add half the mirror height, subtract the hardware drop, and that is the height of both fixings. Their horizontal spacing comes straight off the back of the mirror: measure between the two D-rings or hangers, then center that spacing on the mirror's intended center line.
Example: a 24 by 36 inch mirror centered at 60 inches, with D-rings 6 inches below the top edge and set 2 inches in from each side. Fixing height is 60 plus 18 minus 6, which is 72 inches. The rings sit 20 inches apart, so each mark goes 10 inches either side of the center line, both at 72 inches.
Match the fastener to the wall
On drywall, a stud is always the first choice; a screw driven into framing outperforms any anchor. Off-stud, use toggle bolts or heavy-rated anchors, one per fixing point, and treat the package rating as a ceiling, not a target. Plaster needs pre-drilled holes and toggles that clamp the lath. Brick and masonry need a drilled plug or masonry screw.

When to use a french cleat
Above roughly 50 pounds, or for any mirror you would genuinely hate to lose, switch to a french cleat: two interlocking beveled rails, one on the mirror, one on the wall. The wall rail spreads the load across multiple fasteners and the mirror can't bounce off a hook, because the rails hook into each other along their full length.
Cleats also make level easy. You level one rail once instead of coaxing two separate hooks to the same height.
Heights that work in real rooms
Over a console or entry table, leave 6 to 10 inches between the surface and the frame bottom. Over a dresser, the same gap applies, and the mirror usually looks best a little narrower than the dresser. On an open wall, the standard 57 to 60 inch center works because mirrors are viewed standing.
Check what the mirror reflects
A mirror doubles whatever faces it. Before committing to marks, hold the mirror roughly in place or tape out its outline and stand where people will actually see it. Reflecting a window brightens a hallway; reflecting the cluttered coat hooks doesn't. A few inches of height adjustment can swap one reflection for the other, which is a better reason to move off the default height than most rules of thumb.
Full-length mirrors
A wall-hung full-length mirror works for most households with its bottom edge 10 to 16 inches off the floor. Taller households can push the whole mirror up; the test is that both the tallest person's head and their shoes are visible from a natural standing distance. Full-length mirrors are heavy and mounted low, so children can reach them: two-point fixing or a cleat isn't optional here.
Safety checklist before drilling
- Weigh the mirror and buy hardware rated comfortably above that number per fixing point.
- Scan for studs, pipes, and cables before drilling, especially on bathroom and kitchen walls.
- Use two fixing points or a french cleat, never a single nail in bare drywall.
- Check the hangers on the mirror itself; replace bent D-rings and frayed wire before they fail.
- Avoid hanging heavy glass directly over beds, cribs, or seating unless the fixing is into studs or masonry.
- Pull down on the empty hardware to test it before the mirror goes up.
